Most "best power station" lists rank by brand or price. That's backwards. For car camping, the variable that actually decides whether you bought the right unit is watt-hours per trip-day, balanced against how much weight and trunk space you'll tolerate. Everything else — app quality, port layout, even charge speed — is secondary.

So we sort by weight class. Two classes cover almost every car camping scenario:

Bluetti EB3A — best lightweight surge handling

The Bluetti EB3A carries slightly more energy (268Wh), weighs 10.1 lbs, and its 600W AC / 1,200W surge rating is double the RIVER 3's. How to Choose: Three Questions

  1. Will you run anything over 300W? Coffee makers (950W), kettles (1,500W), and induction burners all require the midweight class. If your biggest load is a fridge or CPAP, lightweight works.
  2. How many person-nights per trip? Under ~4 person-nights with no fridge: lightweight. Above that, or any compressor fridge for 2+ days: midweight, ideally with solar.
  3. How often will you actually carry it? A 27 lb unit in a trunk is trivial; the same unit carried 200 yards to a walk-in site is not. If your sites involve hauling, the 7–10 lb class earns its keep.

Rarely. A 2kWh unit weighs 53–67 lbs, and a typical 3-night family trip with solar assistance sits comfortably inside a 1kWh unit's envelope. The 2kWh class earns its weight for basecamps running cooking loads for large groups, or trips with zero recharge opportunity. For most buyers it's $700+ of capacity that comes home half full.

Can I recharge from my car while driving?

Yes — every unit here accepts 12V input, typically at 100–120W. Two hours of driving returns roughly 200Wh, which fully refills a lightweight unit and adds ~20% to a midweight. It's a meaningful supplement, not a primary strategy.

LFP vs NMC — does it actually matter for a few trips a year?

At 12 trips a year with one full cycle each, an NMC unit's ~500-cycle rating lasts decades on paper. The practical LFP advantages are tolerance for sitting at full charge between trips and better calendar aging. If you're buying new at similar prices, LFP is the default; NMC only makes sense at a steep discount.
